American Heart AssociationAmerican Heart Association Finds Dairy Foods, Including Flavored Milk, Healthy for Children

On Aug. 24, 2009, the American Heart Association (AHA) released a scientific statement regarding new guidelines for sugar consumption and the relationship between sugars and cardiovascular health.

According to AHA, foods such as sweets, sugars and soft drinks are more likely to have a negative impact on the quality of people's diets, whereas dairy foods and milk drinks may have a positive impact.

AHA explained, "When sugars are added to otherwise nutrient-rich foods, such as sugar-sweetened dairy products like flavored milk and yogurt and sugar-sweetened cereals, the quality of children's and adolescents' diets improves, and in the case of flavored milks, no adverse effects on weight status were found."

"All flavored milk contains the same nutrients as white milk," said Molly Szymanski, SUDIA's assistant manager of child nutrition. "Children who drink flavored milk have better overall nutrition and lower body weights than children who do not drink milk."
