What do 40 countries have in common?

On Sept. 28 schools around the globe will celebrate the 12th anniversary of World School Milk Day (WSMD).

WSMD is an international event celebrating the importance of school milk and the dairy farm families who work hard to provide this nutrient-rich beverage.

Want to get involved? You can join more than 40 countries in this year’s celebration by hosting some of these fun WSMD activities:

  1. Host a milk mustache contest. Take snapshots of students and display the photos in the cafeteria. Milk Mustache Recipe: Mix 2 cups milk + 2 cups vanilla ice cream + 2 to 3 Tbsp. vanilla instant pudding in blender.
  2. Sponsor a "Dairy Door" decorating contest among the grades or classes.
  3. Breakfast Picnic: Set up an inviting breakfast picnic area that students can visit before school or between periods. Choose a convenient location and offer nutritious and tasty choices, such as a new flavored yogurt or other recipes made with milk.

WSMD is an opportunity to promote dairy farming through school activities. Support materials include Milk on the Mooove DVD, dairy posters and state dairy fact sheets.

Check out the complete list of WSMD activity ideas, and don’t forget to order support materials for your WSMD activities. All orders must be received by Friday, Sept. 9.

Contact your SUDIA program account manager for help in planning this year’s WSMD celebration.

DASH diet may help teen girls manage weight

teenager with milkA new research study, "Use of a DASH food group score to predict excess weight gain in adolescent girls," evaluated the eating habits of more than 2,300 girls over the age of 10 to determine how teens’ diets affect their ability to manage weight. The study found that those who followed an eating pattern similar to the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) diet, gained less excess weight by the time they reached young adulthood than girls who did not follow this approach.
