World School Milk Day Celebrates Milk and Dairy Farm Families
Schools across the Southeast and around the globe celebrated World School Milk Day (WSMD) on Sept. 28. The 12th anniversary of WSMD honored the importance of school milk and the dairy farm families who provide this nutrient-rich beverage.
Schools celebrated with milk mustaches, taste tests, art contests, costumes, pep rallies, visits from dairy farmers and much more. Click here to see photos from WSMD events at schools near you.
If you missed WSMD or want to continue the celebration, check out these videos and classroom activities from the Southeast Dairy Association.
Fuel Up To Play 60 Offers Farm to School Plays
Two new Fuel Up To Play 60 plays are offering students the chance to learn about their local farms and farmers, as well as about healthy eating and the nutrients that fresh dairy and other farmed foods provide.
Using these plays, try a Farm to School Snack Table where students can sample the foods produced by local farmers, including low-fat and fat-free dairy and seasonal fruits and vegetables, or invite a local dairy farmer to talk about the work they do to produce nutrient-rich foods. Click below for more ideas for implementing these plays.
To help your students learn about the farms in your area, check out our state-specific fact sheets, and meet some of our farmers in Alabama, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia.
Grants are available to help implement these plays in your district. Contact your SUDIA account manager to learn more.
Fuel Up with Smoothies
Join the Fuel Up with Smoothies movement! Treat students to a tasty, nutrient-rich beverage they will not only enjoy, but that also provides dairy’s nine essential vitamins and minerals. Smoothies are a great option for school breakfasts, grab-and-go meals, a la carte lunches and school functions.
Plus, schools participating in Fuel Up To Play 60 can sign up for a grant to help purchase a commercial smoothie blender. Contact your SUDIA account manager for details.
