Commissioner of Agriculture and local dairy farmer attend World School Milk Day celebration
Rowesville, S.C.—On September 30 South Carolina’s Commissioner of Agriculture Hugh Weathers and local dairy farmer Allen Riddell, will team with Bethune Bowmen Elementary (BBE) to celebrate the ninth annual World School Milk Day (WSMD).
WSMD, celebrated by more than 40 countries, provides schools with an opportunity to recognize local dairy farmers while educating children about the importance of dairy foods.
To celebrate this global event, BBE students will participate in art, essay and milk mustache contests. During lunch, Commissioner Weathers will present awards to essay winners. Students who drink milk at lunch will receive promotional items including pencils, stickers and T-shirts. Riddell will answer questions about dairy farming; and SUDIA staff dietitian Mickela Mitchell will address the importance dairy foods.
“Participation in WSMD provides schools with a great opportunity to engage students and teach them about the importance of drinking milk for strong bones and teeth,” said Riddell.
To show appreciation to Southeast dairy farmers, SUDIA staff is working with top dairy producing counties in each state throughout the SUDIA region. This effort will honor local dairy farm families and the nutritious dairy foods they produce.
