Charlotte School Wins Statewide Fuel Up with Milk Competition
WHAT: The Southeast Dairy Association, Carolina Panthers and Charlotte-Mecklenburg Child Nutrition Services have teamed up for the Fuel Up with Milk - Milk Consumption Competition to combat childhood obesity and provide education on the importance of three daily servings of dairy as part of a healthy diet. Students at Southwest Middle School in Charlotte-Mecklenburg County increased their milk consumption by 46 percent over six weeks, winning two March 9 pep rallies with the Carolina Panthers and $300 to encourage healthy school lunch choices. All 175 Charlotte-Mecklenburg County schools participated in the milk challenge.
During the pep rallies, a Carolina Panthers player will discuss the importance of regular physical activity and healthy eating. Though Southwest Middle School was the overall Fuel Up with Milk winner, the county’s top performing pre-kindergarten, elementary and high schools also were rewarded with $300 for the following milk consumption increases:
•Starmount Pre-Kindergarten - 27 percent
•Ballantyne Elementary School - 14 percent
•East Mecklenburg High School - 12 percent
The Milk Consumption Challenge supports Fuel Up to Play 60, a national partnership between the National Football League (NFL), National Dairy Council and USDA to combat childhood obesity. The program combines the excitement of the NFL with challenges, prizes and rewards that inspire kids to get active, eat right and make real changes in their schools and their lives. Fuel Up to Play 60 will reach 36 million youth nationwide in 60,000 elementary, middle and high schools during the 2009/2010 school year.
