The Gilmer Family

Send to a friend
The Gilmer Family has been milking for more than 100 years. David Gilmer returned to the farm after college and assumed ownership. He is the third generation on the farm and his son, Will, is following in his footsteps. Will graduated from college and is now a partner with David in Gilmer Dairy Farm, LLC. They are located in Sulligent, Ala., close to the Mississippi state line.

The Gilmers are innovative in their crop management strategies and environmental efforts. They have invested in a waste storage tank that holds 300,000 gallons. The tank was their environmentally friendly way to invest in their farm. The Gilmers spread the waste on their land while helping the plants grow during a drought.

Will Gilmer also utilizes technology by managing the farm Web site. He maintains an adopt-a-cow Web-based program designed to create interest in agriculture. The program allows consumers the opportunity to track a cow's production and health over a period of time. It was designed for teachers to incorporate into multiple parts of their curriculum.

The Web site also offers agriculture education resources for teachers. Will hosts a blog, which offers an inside perspective to dairy farming life. He updates it often, giving readers a chance to understand life on a dairy farm.

The Gilmer Family stands ready to meet the challenges of tomorrow and works efficiently to develop technology while maintaining the family farming atmosphere they've enjoyed for generations.
