WHAT: As the winners of the Atlanta Falcons and Southeast Dairy Association’s contest to increase student breakfast participation among elementary, middle and high schools, two DeKalb County schools are celebrating National School Breakfast Week in a big way. On March 4, students at Stone Mountain High School will receive a visit from Linebacker Keith Brooking and Falcons cheerleaders, while students at Peachcrest Elementary will celebrate with Falcons cheerleaders and the team’s mascot, Freddie Falcon on March 6.

During the contest, which ran from Nov. 1 - Dec. 31, 2008, Stone Mountain High School increased its breakfast participation by 418 students, while Peachcrest Elementary served an additional 589 breakfasts. Participating DeKalb County high schools competed for the chance to win “Breakfast with Brooking,” while middle and elementary schools strove to “Fuel Up with Freddie Falcon.” During the two breakfast participation contests, more than 56,300 students enjoyed a complete breakfast consisting of fruits, whole grains, and milk. Studies have shown that breakfast is an essential source of energy for students to stay focused both in the classroom and on the playing field. In fact, students who eat breakfast at school – closer to class and test-taking time – perform better on standardized tests than those who skip breakfast or eat breakfast at home.

Despite the contest’s success, there is more work to be done. The South is home to nine of the top 10 states with the highest rates of obesity, diabetes, hypertension and physical inactivity, so the Southeast Dairy Association and Atlanta Falcons have teamed up to host special events and contests to encourage students to engage in 60 minutes of physical activity every day, and to help them increase intake of nutrient-rich foods. The partnership is part of a national program created to reach 25 million students in more than 40,000 schools nationwide with health and nutrition education.
