Egg’stra Healthy Easter Ideas
Try these Easter Bunny approved tips to make Easter fun & healthy:
Easter Basket
• Swap out some of the Easter candy for some brightly colored fruits. You’ll keep all of the sweet taste kids’ love, but add some much-needed vitamins and minerals.
• Think about adding healthful foods that are fun for kids: low-fat string cheese, fresh berries, dried fruits, nuts (if appropriate age), flavored low-fat yogurt and low-fat chocolate milk to the traditional Easter basket treats.
• Instead of candy, add small toys that will get children up and active like a jump rope, Frisbee or ball.
Start the Day with Breakfast
• If children eat breakfast, before hunting for Easter eggs filled with candy, they will be less likely to fill their tummies with excessive candy.
• Serve a variety of child-friendly portions of nutrient-rich breakfast foods like eggs, whole grain cereal, and fresh fruit and low-fat dairy.
• Serve low-fat white or flavored milk in a fun Easter Bunny cup with a crazy straw.
• Give kids plenty of fun options, and they’ll be eating healthy without thinking twice:
o Top cottage cheese or low-fat yogurt with some fresh berries and low-fat granola.
o Mix fat-free yogurt with a dollop of honey and use it as a tasty dip for sliced apples and other bite-size pieces of fresh fruit.
o Let the kids make their own smoothies at a “creation station” in the kitchen where they can mix in low-fat milk or yogurt, with fruit and other favorite items.
o Go traditional with scrambled eggs topped with low-fat cheese and whole wheat toast or milk and whole grain cereal topped with fresh berries or banana slices.
Easter Egg Hunt
• Children and adults need 60 minutes of physical activity each day.
o Make it fun on Easter by hiding eggs outside and see who can not only find the most, but also who can find them the fastest.
o Get the entire family involved by holding a relay race. Place eggs on spoons and run out to a point and back to the team without dropping the egg off the spoon. The first team to complete the race is the winner.
• Instead of filling plastic eggs with candy, fill with money, stickers, or small toys.
