Dairy Farmers' Environmentally Friendly Practices Help Protect the Land for Future Generations

Atlanta – April 21, 2009 – America’s dairy farmers protect the environment by incorporating modern technology and environmentally friendly farming techniques that help to reduce the industry’s carbon footprint. From methane gas digesters that produce clean energy and reduce costs, to land and water conservation practices, the nation’s dairy farmers continue to show great respect for the earth.

“Dairy farmers have a wonderful story to tell in the whole area of environmental stewardship,” said David Pelzer of Dairy Management Inc. (DMI). “Earth Day provides a great opportunity for dairy producers to step forward and tell their story not only of the things they currently do on their farms, but also of the initiatives that are underway in the dairy industry to help further reduce greenhouse gas emissions.”

Earth Day is “a time to celebrate gains made and create new visions to accelerate environmental progress.” U.S. dairy producers have cut their greenhouse gas emissions by 63 percent over the past 60 years. Pelzer says the dairy industry has identified 12 projects they can adopt to cut greenhouse gas emissions by another 12 percent by 2020.

“Dairy farmers have always been good stewards of the environment,” said Amanda Trice, integrated communications director for the Southeast United Dairy Industry Association (SUDIA). “They understand the importance of protecting their natural resources and are employing environmentally-sensitive techniques that preserve the land, water and air for future generations.”

Last year, DMI launched an industry-wide sustainability initiative bringing together all sectors of the milk supply chain to identify and put into action ways to reduce the carbon footprint of fluid milk. As part of the sustainability initiative, many producers are participating in farm energy audits and making use of methane digesters.

“With all of these types of projects, what we’re looking at are strategies that are not only environmentally-friendly and socially responsible, but also very importantly economically viable for dairy producers,” said Pelzer.
