The National Dairy Council and National Football League (NFL) hope to help schools across the country score big with Fuel Up to Play 60, a program designed to empower youth to take charge of their health and make long-term nutrition and physical activity changes. On September 30, 2009, Lafourche Parish’s Lockport Middle School kicked off The Bayou State’s Fuel Up to Play 60 program with a student wellness event hosted by the Southeast Dairy Association and New Orleans Saints.

The New Orleans Saints Director of Youth Programs lead students through obstacle courses and fun inflatables and encouraged them to be active for 60 minutes each day – or to “Play 60.” A registered dietitian with the Southeast Dairy Association discussed how students can “fuel up” with critical nutrient-rich foods missing from their diets, including low-fat and fat-free dairy foods, fruits, vegetables and whole grains.

The Saints and Southeast Dairy Association aim to combat childhood obesity, which plagues 36 percent of 10-17 year olds in Louisiana (2007 National Survey of Children’s Health), by combining the excitement of the NFL with challenges, prizes and rewards that inspire kids to get active, eat right and make real changes in their schools. Students at participating schools throughout the country will plan and implement initiatives to expand opportunities for physical activity and increase availability of more kid-appealing, great-tasting, nutrient-rich foods, such as low-fat chocolate milk, yogurt and fruit parfaits, whole grain pasta and salads.

Interested schools are encouraged to visit www.fueluptoplay60.com to register for the program and receive a free Fuel Up to Play 60 Wellness Activation Kit, which includes healthy eating and physical activity program ideas and tools.
