Jefferson Parish School Rewarded for Wellness Achievements
WHAT: John Adams Middle School won a health and wellness competition open to Jefferson Parish Middle Schools and will be rewarded with a New Orleans Saints and Southeast Dairy Association pep rally on Tuesday, Dec. 15 at 1:15 p.m. Students will learn about the importance of 60 minutes of physical activity and dairy’s role in a healthy diet from New Orleans Saints Wide Receiver Marques Colston, Director of Youth Programs Jason Trosclair, mascot Gumbo and the team’s Saintsations cheerleaders.
Throughout November, nine Jefferson Parish middle schools participated in the competition as part of the national Fuel Up To Play 60 program, which was launched in October 2009 by the National Football League (NFL) and National Dairy Council to combat childhood obesity. Students at John Adams Middle School tracked their healthy eating and physical activity progress through the interactive Fuel Up to Play 60 Web site, earning 185,570 points – the most of any middle school in the area – and also increasing milk consumption by 49 percent. Points are earned through activities including consuming three daily servings of dairy (30 points), engaging in 60 minutes of physical activity (120 points) and much more.
The wellness competition and pep rally is a partnership initiative between the Southeast Dairy Association and the currently undefeated New Orleans Saints in support of Fuel Up to Play 60. The program combines the excitement of the NFL with challenges, prizes and rewards that inspire kids to get active, eat right, including three daily dairy servings, and make real changes in their schools and their lives. Fuel Up to Play 60 will reach 36 million youth nationwide in 60,000 elementary, middle and high schools during the 2009/2010 school year.
