CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Dec. 9, 2009 – Chris Mauck of Lexington, N.C., is the winner of the sixth annual Junior Broadcaster contest, which gives young Carolina Panthers fans the chance to become a sports broadcaster for a day. Mauck, age 11, competed alongside nine other randomly selected contestants on Dec. 5 and was selected by Mick Mixon, radio voice of the Panthers and Jim Szoke, Panthers color commentator to be the Junior Broadcaster at the Dec. 6 Carolina Panthers vs. Tampa Bay Buccaneers game. The Junior Broadcaster contest is a partnership initiative launched in 2003 between the Southeast Dairy Association, Carolina Panthers and Harris Teeter.

Mauck, a 5th grade student at Northwest Elementary School, performed a play-by-play script along with the other contestants. All contestants were treated to a behind-the-scenes tour of Bank of America Stadium and received a gift bag of game tickets, signed Panthers memorabilia and more. As the contest winner, Mauck recorded a special game day message about healthy lifestyles that was played on the Panthervision screen and received four lower level tickets to the Dec. 6 game, on-field passes and a Panther Prize Pack, as well as accommodations and dinner for four in downtown Charlotte.

“I’m Chris Mauck, encouraging you to Fuel Up to Play 60. That’s right – eating low-fat dairy, fruits, vegetables and whole grains will fuel your body so you can be active and play 60 minutes every day!,” Muack said in his message to Panthers fans.

“The South is home to nine of the top 10 states with the highest rates of obesity, diabetes, hypertension and physical inactivity,” said Dottie Ryan, registered dietitian with the Southeast Dairy Association. “Through this partnership with the Panthers and Harris Teeter, we’re encouraging youth to kick off the new year with better health by choosing nutrient-rich foods like low-fat and fat-free dairy, whole grains, fruits and vegetables; and getting 60 minutes of physical activity every day.”

The Junior Broadcaster contest supports Fuel Up to Play 60, a national program launched in October 2009 by the National Football League (NFL) and National Dairy Council to combat childhood obesity. The program combines the excitement of the NFL with challenges, prizes and rewards that inspire kids to get active, eat right and make real changes in their schools and their lives. Fuel Up to Play 60 will reach 36 million youth nationwide in 60,000 elementary, middle and high schools during the 2009/2010 school year.
