Fuel Up To Play 60 Student Ambassadors CJ Freeman and Chris Scales Lead Fight Against Childhood Obesity in North Carolina
Greensboro, N.C. – August 8, 2011 – Thirty-one of the nation’s most passionate student leaders recently gathered at Washington, D.C.’s Newseum to collaborate on in-school solutions to the childhood obesity epidemic at the Fuel Up to Play 60 (FUTP60) Student Ambassador Summit. Northern Guilford Middle School students C.J. Freeman and Chris Scales were selected to participate in the summit.
FUTP60, an in-school nutrition and physical activity program backed by the Southeast United Dairy Industry Association (SUDIA), National Dairy Council (NDC) and the National Football League (NFL), selected the students from thousands of applicants to attend the two-day event, which featured a healthy cooking demonstration by celebrity chef Carla Hall and an NFL fitness session with St. Louis Rams quarterback Sam Bradford. Serving in FUTP60’s most elite student leadership positions, these youth are the face of positive nutrition and fitness changes in their schools. In fact, Freeman and Scales have helped sign up more than 200 Northern Guilford Middle School students for the program.
The student ambassadors attended the summit with their teachers, or “Program Advisors,” who help the students make lasting changes in their schools’ health and wellness environments. Coach Russ McHenry, the program advisor to Freeman and Scales, couldn’t be prouder of his students. “These young men wanted to make a positive, long-lasting impact that would change lives forever,” McHenry said. “They have inspired Northern Guilford students to get active and eat healthy, and they aim to spread that inspiration across all of North Carolina.”
Molly Szymanski, director of school programs, Southeast Dairy Association, looks forward to seeing what plans the student ambassadors put into action now that they have returned from the summit. “The students were enthusiastic and eager to start creating their own challenges for their peers. It is amazing to see what an impact these young students can have in their communities.”
The FUTP60 Student Ambassador Program is open to all students who are actively engaged in FUTP60. Students may apply online to become a Student Ambassador for the 2012-2013 schoolyear at FuelUpToPlay60.com in September.
FUTP60, launched by NDC, SUDIA and the NFL, in collaboration with United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), is successfully helping youth make positive changes in their schools by encouraging consumption of nutrient-dense foods such as low-fat and fat-free dairy, fruits, vegetables and whole grains, and participation in 60 minutes of physical activity every day. Students engage in fun challenges to earn prizes and recognition for their schools, while tracking their healthy eating and physical activity on FuelUpToPlay60.com.
