WHAT: The Southeast Dairy Association, Carolina Panthers and Harris Teeter have teamed up for the fourth annual Milk Cap Challenge to encourage children to get 3-A-Day of milk, cheese and yogurt for strong bones and healthy bodies. Students at Rea View Elementary in Union County collected the most milk caps in one month of any participating school – 20,000 milk caps in September, winning a November 25 pep rally with a Panthers football player. More than 35 schools participated in the program, for a total collection of 105,000 milk caps.

During the pep rally, a Panthers football player will visit the winning students and discuss the importance of physical activity and good nutrition in leading a healthy life. Panthers mascot Sir Purr also will attend and present a $1,000 check to the school for cafeteria and physical education equipment on behalf of the Southeast Dairy Association and the Panthers.

“This contest was fun and challenging for our students, and it also showed them the role of dairy foods in a healthy lifestyle,” said Donna Cook – principal, Rea View Elementary. “We are proud of our students’ dedication, and look forward to the upcoming pep rally.”

The Milk Cap Challenge is part of Harris Teeter’s Together in Education program and the Southeast Dairy Association and Carolina Panthers 2008-2009 partnership promotion. The partnership is part of a national program created to reach 18 million students in more than 40,000 schools nationwide with health and nutrition education. The program aims to empower youth by partnering with them to get 60 minutes of physical activity each day and to choose more nutritious foods, including low-fat and fat-free dairy products, whole grains, fruits and vegetables.
