WHAT: The Southeast Dairy Association and Atlanta Falcons Youth Foundation are teaming up with Nike to provide Atlanta youth ages five to 16 with an opportunity to improve their health, their fitness and their planet on Thursday, Jan. 29 at the event “Run, Refresh, Recycle.” Between 3:45 and 5:15 p.m., youth will participate in a wide variety of physical activities, from inflatable bouncers to African dance. To refresh, students can visit the mobile dairy classroom where they can sample milk flavors and witness both old-fashioned and current milking techniques on a live cow. In addition, Nike will sponsor designated recycling areas for tennis shoes, which will be used to resurface running tracks and basketball courts.

This event serves to combat the sedentary lifestyles and poor nutrition that have, in part, spurred the current health and nutrition crisis among America's youth. The overall goal is to inspire children to adopt healthier behaviors, such as consuming 3-A-Day™ of milk, cheese or yogurt for strong bones and healthy bodies, and committing to 60 minutes of physical activity every day.

Regionally, the South is home to nine of the top 10 states with the highest rates of obesity, diabetes, hypertension and physical inactivity. To reverse this trend, the Southeast Dairy Association and the Atlanta Falcons Youth Foundation host special events in the Atlanta area to encourage regular physical activity and increased intake of nutrient-rich foods.
