WHAT:
As the winner of the Southeast Dairy Association, Carolina Panthers and Charlotte-Mecklenburg Child Nutrition Services’ the “Moose is Loose” breakfast participation contest, Mountain Island Elementary in Charlotte, N.C. will be treated to a pep rally on December 16. Making appearances at the pep rally are Pro-Bowl wide receiver Muhsin Muhammad (“Moose”), Panthers mascot Sir Purr and the TopCat cheerleaders. Muhammad will visit with the students and talk about the importance of physical activity and eating a nutritious breakfast each morning to sustain energy throughout the day.

As the Charlotte-Mecklenburg schools with the highest increase in breakfast participation during the contest, Mountain Island Elementary, Independence High School, Quail Hollow Middle School and Starmount Pre-K Center will be presented $5,000 to “re-style” their cafeterias to encourage nutrient-rich food and beverage selections and regular physical activity. The schools also will receive a Panthers football signed by Muhammad and a celebratory plaque.

During the contest, 30,500 students enjoyed a complete breakfast consisting of fruits, whole grains and dairy foods – an average daily increase of 3,400 students – to provide fuel the students need to stay focused in the classroom and on the field.

Together, the Southeast Dairy Association and Carolina Panthers host special events and contests throughout football season to encourage kids to engage in 60 minutes of physical activity every day, and to help kids improve their intake of nutrient-rich foods. The partnership is part of a national program created to reach 25 million students in more than 40,000 schools nationwide with health and nutrition education.
