Send to a friend
WHAT: The Southeast Dairy Association and Atlanta Falcons have teamed up for the Cobb County Milk Sales Contest to combat childhood obesity and provide education on the importance of three daily servings of dairy as part of a healthy diet. McCleskey Middle School increased its milk sales 7.4 percent from August-December 2009 – more than any of the other 10 participating schools in the county. The school will be rewarded with a pep rally with Atlanta Falcons linebacker Curtis Lofton, mascot Freddie Falcon and Falcons cheerleaders on Monday, March 15.

The Milk Sales Contest supports Fuel Up to Play 60, a national partnership between the National Football League (NFL), National Dairy Council and USDA to combat childhood obesity. The program combines the excitement of the NFL with challenges, prizes and rewards that inspire kids to get active, eat right and make real changes in their schools and their lives. Fuel Up to Play 60 will reach 36 million youth nationwide in 60,000 elementary, middle and high schools during the 2009/2010 school year.

Southern Swig & Swag Contest Hosted By Atlanta Falcons and Southeast Dairy Association

WHAT: Prior to the Dec. 13 1 p.m. kick-off of the Atlanta Falcons and New Orleans Saints match-up, youth are encouraged to participate in the Southern Swig & Swag Contest at Falcons Landing, a pre-game destination with complimentary activities located on International Plaza between the Georgia Dome and Philips Arena. The contest will be held 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. at the Southeast Dairy Association’s table, where youth can swig chocolate milk and show off their swagger. The school with the most participating students will win a 2010 pep rally with Freddie Falcon and Falcons cheerleaders, while the student who shows the most swagger will win a “swag bag,” including signed Falcons merchandise and Fuel Up to Play 60 goods. To enter the contest, participants must take their own milk mustache picture at the Southeast Dairy Association’s booth and submit it online. Game-day tickets are not required to be a part of the Falcons Landing pre-game events.

The Southern Swig & Swag Contest is a partnership initiative between the Southeast Dairy Association and Atlanta Falcons in support of Fuel Up to Play 60, a national program launched in October 2009 by the National Football League (NFL) and National Dairy Council to combat childhood obesity.

The contest also aims to increase awareness that flavored milk provides the same nine essential nutrients as unflavored milk, including calcium, potassium and magnesium – three of the five nutrients that fall short in children’s diets. In fact, studies show that consuming low-fat or fat-free flavored milk can help children and adolescents meet the 2005 Dietary Guidelines for Americans’ recommendations for three daily servings of dairy foods and increase their intake of milk nutrients.

Atlanta Falcons’ Curtis Lofton Signs as a 2009-2010 Southeast Dairy Association Spokesperson

Send to a friend
Curtis Lofton was selected as the 2009-2010 Southeast United Dairy Industry Association (SUDIA) spokesperson from the Atlanta Falcons.

As a SUDIA spokesperson, Lofton inspires students to live active and healthy lifestyles by encouraging participation in the “Fuel Up To Play 60” (FUTP60) program.

FUTP60 is a youth-based program that encourages students to exercise 60 minutes each day and eat a well balanced diet, including low-fat and fat-free dairy.

Lofton, 23, is a linebacker and was drafted by the Atlanta Falcons in 2008 and was ranked fourth on the team with 94 tackles.

While playing college football at Oklahoma, Lofton earned first-team All-American honors from the NFL Draft Report, Football Writers Association of America, Sports Illustrated and The Sporting News.

“Lofton’s achievements and dedication to living an active and healthy lifestyle make him a great role model for children,” said Betsy Dietsch, SUDIA’s program account manager for Georgia. “The FUTP60 program is a great way for students to learn about the importance of physical activity and nutrition.”
